Weddings in Aranjuez and Chinchón:the town is the backdrop

South of Madrid the town itself is the backdrop. What to know about light, heat and venues before you choose.

South of Madrid there is something the north does not offer: architecture. In Aranjuez and Chinchón there is no need to build a set, because the town already is one. That changes the whole film of a wedding.

What changes when working with light here

In a country estate the backdrop is nature, and the light has to be sought out. Here the backdrop is stone: an arcaded square, a courtyard, an eighteenth-century mill. Light bounces off it and grows gentler.

  • There is refuge when the sun presses: on an August afternoon, a shaded courtyard is worth more than many hectares of garden.
  • Ten minutes on the street, just the two of you, yield images unlike anyone else's.

Venues in the area

The southern corridor gathers estates and wineries roughly twenty minutes apart by car:

  • Reales Bodegas de Carlos III and Bodegas Casa del Valle, in Aranjuez.
  • El Molino del Manto, in Chinchón: an eighteenth-century mill with accommodation and a long record of celebrations.
  • Los 3 Corrales and Campo y Olivo, also in Chinchón.

A word on summer: Aranjuez and Chinchón are among the hottest places in the region. In July and August a mid-afternoon portrait session is not feasible in a wedding dress. Keep it for the last hour of the day.

When the town is celebrating

These towns have a calendar of their own, and a wedding there crosses it. Chinchón's patron saint festivities are on 15 and 16 August, and its Plaza Mayor becomes the stage for bull runs and bullfights. In Aranjuez, the Fiestas del Motín, declared of International Tourist Interest, are held in early September: those of 2026 ran from the 2nd to the 6th. Chinchón's official calendar also includes the Passion play, the Medieval Market and the feast of Santiago Apóstol.

It does not mean you cannot marry on those days. It means asking the town council and the venue how that week affects traffic, parking and noise, and planning the route of the portrait session through the old town with care.

A protected landscape

The Cultural Landscape of Aranjuez was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2001. It includes gardens, orchards, tree-lined avenues, the street layout and the eighteenth-century town centre. If your session includes gardens or historic buildings, ask beforehand which permits are needed and who holds them: the town council or the body that manages each site can tell you.

Heat, in AEMET's figures

For the Madrid zone "Sur, Vegas y Oeste" (south, river plains and west), AEMET sets the yellow heat warning at 36 degrees, orange at 39 and red at 42. Yellow is the first warning level. Check on AEMET which zone your municipality belongs to, look at the warning in the days before, and decide in advance what moves if one is issued.

A simple principle

Where the set is already in place, the only task is not to get in the way: respect the rhythm of the winery or mill, where timings are tight and the kitchen leads, and keep one consistent colour approach across photography and film.
