Weddings in the cigarrales of Toledo:historic estates facing the city
Historic estates facing Toledo: their particularities, the best hour of light and what to ask before booking.

A cigarral is not an estate with a view: it is a category with a name of its own. These are historic estates on the hills south of the Tagus, facing Toledo, which began as fruit orchards and became the place from which the city beholds itself.

Five cigarrales that host weddings

The orientation that decides the ceremony hour
The cigarrales sit on the southern edge of the Tagus, but they do not all look at Toledo from the same angle. At some, the city lies east of the estate; at others, north.
As the sun sinks in the west, at the former it is behind you: Toledo is lit face-on, golden, with the sun on the couple's faces, and the couple keeps light on their faces. At those facing north, the light arrives from the side: the city does not glow in the same way, but the rooftops gain relief. It is no worse; it is a different image, and it helps to know which applies before fixing the hour.
That coincidence lasts between twenty and thirty minutes. Afterwards the city dims before the sky does.
At exactly what time
| Date | Good light begins | Sunset |
|---|---|---|
| 15 May | 20:47 | 21:26 |
| 15 June | 21:07 | 21:48 |
| 15 July | 21:05 | 21:45 |
| 15 August | 20:37 | 21:15 |
| 15 September | 19:50 | 20:26 |
| 15 October | 19:00 | 19:37 |
Find your date and subtract twenty minutes: that is when you should be at the lookout, not when you leave the cocktail hour.

What to ask before signing
- Whether catering is compulsory: at the cigarrales it usually is, and at one the kitchen carries a chef's name.
- How many people really fit indoors: the larger figure usually counts the garden.
- How to get there: these are slopes with narrow lanes; ask about parking and coach access.
- Whether another celebration is held the same day.
How hot Toledo really gets
AEMET's Toledo station records an average maximum temperature of 34.6 degrees in July and 34.0 in August. In September it drops to 29.0 and in October to 22.1; the average October minimum is 10.2. These are historical averages, not a forecast, but they show where your date falls: a cocktail hour at five o'clock in July is nothing like one in October.
That is why, in July and August, the lookout hour at the end of the afternoon is far more bearable than a cocktail hour at five.
If the day goes down into the city
If the programme includes a walk through the old town, bear in mind that Toledo is introducing a low-emission zone in the old town. According to the municipal project, access is controlled at four points: Bisagra, the Doce Cantos slope, Gerardo Lobo street and the Recaredo promenade. There is a moratorium until 31 December 2030 during which vehicles are practically exempt, although non-residents must head for a car park. The start date and final rules are worth confirming with the council.
The rules on access, coaches and loading and unloading may change. If you are organising guest transport, ask the council and the cigarral how it is handled that day.
Heat warnings
For heat warnings, AEMET sets 38 degrees for yellow, 40 for orange and 44 for red in Toledo's "Valle del Tajo" zone, two degrees more than in the metropolitan area of Madrid. If the cigarral falls in another zone, the threshold will differ: check the warning for the exact zone in the days before, and agree in advance what changes if one is issued.
A note on midday light
Between dense tree shade and a very bright city behind, midday contrast is demanding. It is solved with your own light for the cocktail hour under the trees, and by placing the ceremony where the backdrop is not the city, keeping the lookout for those twenty minutes that deserve it.
