Weddings in mills and sheep-shearing barns:working buildings made for celebrating

Thick walls, genuine beams and water or open country all around. What they offer and what to ask.

Old millstone with a wooden beam, in a stone and timber interior

A mill and an esquileo (a shearing barn) are working buildings: they were raised to grind grain and shear sheep, not to celebrate. That is why they have what no new estate can fabricate: thick walls, genuine beams and a bond with water or open country that predates any wedding.

Shearing barns

An esquileo was a vast hall where migrating flocks were sheared. Segovia keeps the finest.

What to ask in an old stone building

  • Where the electrical panel is and how much power it carries: music, kitchen and lighting can exceed the installation of a medieval building.
  • Whether anything can be fixed to the beams: in old timber, almost never.
  • What happens with the water in autumn: the flow rises and riverbanks become impassable in heels.
  • Whether a catering vehicle can reach the building.

A special case for light

The challenge is range: very dark interiors, with unlimed stone and small windows, against open doors onto full sun. It is solved in two ways, both best decided in advance.

  • Treat the doorway as a source of light rather than a backdrop: with the couple placed inside, beside the opening, that side light is the best these places offer.
  • Bring your own light for the party indoors: in unlimed stone nothing returns the light.

And one advantage that makes up for it: at the mills, the last hour of light on the river gives reflections no estate with a swimming pool can imitate.

Segovia is not Madrid: the temperature

AEMET's Segovia station sits at about 1,000 metres above sea level, and the data show it. The average minimum temperature is about 12 degrees in June, 11 in September and 8 in October; at the Retiro, in Madrid, they are 16, 15 and 11. By day the difference shows too: the average July maximum is 29.7 degrees in Segovia and 32.1 at the Retiro.

For a wedding in a Segovian shearing barn, this means the night tends to call for a wrap even in midsummer. If the dinner runs on outdoors, the time of the meal and the guests' clothes count.

What to ask about cold and heat

  • Whether the barn has heating or whether it can be installed, and of what kind: in a stone building with beams, the installation may not accept just any appliance.
  • Whether there is an enclosed space for guests when it turns cool, and whether everyone fits.
  • What happens with the doors open at nightfall: draughts and insects are a real problem in old buildings.

A different heat warning

AEMET's warnings also follow the terrain: in Segovia, the Sistema Central zone warns from 34 degrees and the Meseta zone from 36. If the venue is in the Sistema Central, the threshold is lower, and the best reference is the exact zone of the municipality.

And when it rains

The Segovia station records, on average, 17 millimetres and 2.7 rainy days in July, and 59 millimetres and 8.9 days in October. These are historical data from the Segovia station: October is far wetter than July, so it is worth deciding the indoor plan in advance.
