Weddings in the Sierra Norte of Madrid:estates at the capital's door

Genuine countryside about forty minutes from Madrid: what the area offers and how to make the most of its light.

Pine wood backlit, the sun between the branches

Along one stretch of the A-1 there are more celebration estates than anywhere else in the region. Many couples find out late: they arrive at one estate by chance and discover that five others lie a few minutes away.

Why this area

The Sierra Norte achieves something uncommon: authentic countryside roughly forty minutes from Madrid. Guests can return home if they wish, nobody gets lost, and yet the celebration is not hemmed in by the city. The party runs longer, and its second hour, when no one is thinking of the camera any more, tends to yield the most honest images.

Estates in the area

Within some fifteen kilometres, all along the A-1:

  • Finca Castillo Monteviejo, in El Molar: a French-inspired castle with 10,000 m² of gardens.
  • La Antigua Harinera, in El Molar.
  • Finca El Morenillo, in El Molar.
  • Finca Granda, in El Molar.
  • Aal Cachucho, in San Agustín del Guadalix: six hectares and a boutique hotel.
  • Casa de Oficios, in Torremocha de Jarama.

The light, date by date

The half hour before sunset gives the images that end up framed. That window shifts by nearly two hours between May and October, and the wedding timetable is fixed months ahead.

Find your date and subtract twenty minutes: that is when to be able to leave the cocktail hour.

Arriving along the A-1

Arriving with time in hand is advised: the unforeseen on a wedding day tends to be traffic, not cameras. Arriving early allows the empty venue to be seen, setting up in natural light and understanding where everything sits before the day begins.

When heat warnings start in the sierra

Spain's national meteorological agency (AEMET) divides the Community of Madrid into warning zones. In the Sierra de Madrid zone the yellow heat warning is issued at 34 degrees; in the metropolitan and Henares zone, and in the south, the river plains and the west, at 36. In the sierra, in other words, warnings come earlier.

It is worth checking which zone your estate's municipality belongs to and looking at the warning in the days before. As general advice: plan continuous shade for the cocktail hour and cool water within reach of older guests.

The busiest traffic weekends

The national traffic authority (DGT) activates special operations on the busiest travel weekends. In summer 2026 they ran from 3 to 5 July, from 31 July to 2 August, from 14 to 16 August, plus the return operation from 28 to 31 August. The dates change every year, and the DGT publishes those of the current summer.

If your wedding falls on a weekend like that, allow extra travel time for guests, for whoever serves the dinner and for whoever brings the equipment. It is solved with a conversation beforehand, not on the day.

Three things worth putting in writing months ahead

  • What time each supplier arrives and by which route: confirm the access route with the estate (general advice).
  • Who tells the guests the real departure time of the coach, if there is one.
  • What the plan is if the sky clouds over: where the ceremony takes place, who decides, and at what time.
