Wedding photographer in Ibiza:when the best light falls

A wedding on the island is not a city wedding with a better backdrop. The timetable, the logistics and the light all change.

Sunset over a cove with boats and a gull in flight

The sun sets earlier in Ibiza than on the mainland, even though the clocks read the same. The gap is around twenty-five minutes, and those minutes are exactly the window of the day's most beautiful light. It is worth knowing before the schedule is fixed with the chosen venue.

Calm sea at dawn

The clock is misleading

A timetable calculated as if the wedding were on the mainland arrives late for the only half hour that matters, and that half hour does not return. Sunset times in the middle of each month:

Where the sun goes down

Direction matters more than the hour. On the western coast the sun sets in front of you, over the water: the sun behind the couple, and silhouettes. On the eastern coast it disappears behind the island and, in the minutes that follow, a soft pink band rises over the sea, the most forgiving and least sought-after light.

Beneath the veil, close up

The point on the horizon where the sun disappears shifts by about forty degrees between June and October. The same estate, at the same hour, offers very different backdrops depending on the month.

If the venue faces east, the couple's portraits can be taken elsewhere: the western coast is about twenty minutes by car from almost anywhere, and you return in time for dinner.

What weather to expect, month by month

The Ibiza Airport station, according to AEMET averages (1981-2010), gives a useful clue. In June, July and August it rains between 5 and 18 mm a month, on between half a day and a day and a half. In September the average rises to 57 mm and in October to 58 mm, with between four and six rainy days a month. These are long-term averages, not a forecast, but they show how much of a plan B your date calls for.

That does not rule out September or October. It means the covered space should be decided and written down, not left pending until the morning of the wedding. Three questions are enough: where is the ceremony held if it rains, who decides the change and at what time, and how long does the alternative set-up take? And a fourth, if you care how the film will look: how much natural light does that indoor space have?

If you are thinking of the beach

According to Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition, occupying maritime-terrestrial public domain with removable installations, or in special circumstances of intensity, danger or profitability, requires prior administrative authorisation, resolved by the regional Coastal Service within a maximum of four months. That website does not mention weddings expressly, so we cannot say whether a given ceremony needs it. The prudent course is to ask the local town hall, and to do it early, because the maximum period is four months. And by type of venue, where to hold a wedding in Ibiza.

What is not published

Ask each venue about its capacity and terms before assuming anything: published information is scarce, and the figures circulating on portals tend to copy one another without a clear source. Also confirm the venue still hosts weddings.

What changes in a destination wedding

  • Arriving the day before, never relying on a same-day flight.
  • Seeing the place in its light before the date.
  • Doubling the equipment: on an island, on an August Saturday, there is nowhere to replace anything.
  • Covering more than one day: welcome dinner, wedding and Sunday lunch.

Wedding photographer and videographer in Ibiza

We work from Palma and two professionals attend, photography and film, on the same day and with the same colour approach. On an island that choice weighs more: one team means one journey and one timetable, and it stops two suppliers getting in each other's way at the entrance or at sunset. We explain it in wedding photographer and videographer from one team and, for the detail of the film, in wedding videographer: the wedding film.

Before deciding it helps to settle the logistics: getting to Ibiza for a wedding, wedding suppliers in Ibiza and Formentera and where to hold a wedding in Ibiza, by type of place. If you are torn between the two islands, a wedding in Ibiza or Mallorca: how to choose. And to compare teams, eight questions before choosing a photographer.

The estimate

It is prepared to measure and in writing. Travel and accommodation, if needed, are settled in writing before signing, so nothing appears afterwards. The same approach applies to other Mediterranean islands; only the sunset time changes, and it is calculated for your date and your venue.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a wedding photographer and videographer in Ibiza?

Yes. We work from Palma and usually in Mallorca, Ibiza and Madrid. Two professionals attend, one with the stills camera and one with the video camera, on the same day and with the same colour approach. Tell us the date and the place and we will reply with a written proposal.

What time does the sun set in Ibiza for a wedding?

Using the NOAA solar algorithm: 21:22 on 15 June, 21:20 on 15 July, 20:50 on 15 August, 20:04 on 15 September and 19:17 on 15 October. That is between 19 and 26 minutes earlier than in Madrid, depending on the month.

Does it rain in Ibiza in September and October?

According to AEMET averages for the Ibiza-Airport station (1981-2010), September receives 57 mm and October 58 mm, with four to six rainy days each month, against 5 to 18 mm in June, July and August. They are averages over many years, not a forecast: they show how much plan B is worth having and why the covered space should be settled in writing.

Do you need permission for a beach ceremony in Ibiza?

We cannot say for a specific case. According to the Spanish Ministry for the Ecological Transition, occupying the maritime-terrestrial public domain with removable structures requires prior administrative authorisation, with a maximum period of four months, and its website does not mention weddings expressly. The prudent course is to ask the local town hall as early as you can.

How do you get to Ibiza for a wedding?

There is an airport and a ferry, and what is worth settling is the transfer and arriving with margin: getting to Ibiza for a wedding: airport, ferry and guest transfers. For a destination wedding it is best to arrive the day before, without depending on one flight.
